Depth charges patterns, set depths, etc

I know that in early war ASDIC didn't give more than a hint of the uboat's depth. So what depths did the escorts set their depth charges to explode at?
Was there a rule of thumb for this? Any ideas?
Also, what were the common depth charge patterns they formed with the Racks + Throwers?
