U-boat barrel tactic

In the personal journal of a WWI submarine chaser crewman, an incident is described in which a trawler sighted a "bbl." -- by which I assume he means a barrel. The barrel subsequently submerges, and a depth charge attack is waged by the trawler and chasers. The crewmen describes this as an old "barrel stunt" used by U-boats trying to cross the barrage lines.
Could someone provide a more fulsome account of what the "barrel stunt" was, or a reference to a similar incident?
