On 11th October 1917 UC-38 penetrated the protected Allied anchorage near Gaza and in an early evening attack sunk the British monitor M-15 and the destroyer Staunch.
Wendlant then concluded his skilful mission by escaping round the net again.

How did he know what vessels he would find at the anchorage? Perhaps we know have an answer. The Bavarian State Archives recently released and posted around 3000 aerial pictures of Palestine Operations 1917-18 - they can be viewed here [www.gda.bayern.de].. The quality is excellent and there is an excellent zoom facility. Pictures 695B and 695C are of vessels at sea and underway. One is clearly M-15 the other is possibly the Strauch. Sadly they are undated.

Does anyone have a copy of the Ktb from the UC-38 for November 1917? Is there any mention of the attack on the anchorage being made after aerial recon?

Regards

David
