Sinking of Gibraltar

Hi,

I live in Gibraltar and whilst on a walk, I came across the Devils Gap Battery, which still has the original 6 inch guns in position.

[en.wikipedia.org]

The wikipedia entry intrigued me by stating that one of the guns fired and sunk a German submarine close to Algeciras in August 1917, though no mention was made as to which U-Boat it was (this information is in my historic walking guide as well).

I have examined all the German/Austrian U-boat histories on this site and there is no reference to any sinking nor have any U-boats been lost in that area during that period.

I therefore wonder if the boat was on the surface, subsequently dived and was treated by the British as a sinking by gunfire. I am aware that there were operational U-boats off Gibraltar at that time and I wonder if someone knows as to if there are any records to this event.

Many thanks.
