German knowledge of the use of depth charges

I was reading Richard Hartmann in U-49 returned from a patrol in May 1917 with the first report of a depth charging. Is this correct? If so, Do we know which vessel delivered the depth charging that he later reported on?
Apparently previous depth charge targets did not survive. I read DCs used in March 1916 against U-68 vs. Farnborough. Also read UC-19 in Dec. 1916 was the first confirmed DC only sinking. I suppose they were not readily available 1916 and so rarely used until sometime in 1917 when described above.
Anyone familiar with how many submarines were sunk by DCs prior to May 1917?
