U Boats vs Destroyers

Hello

What was the policy for U Boats on encountering a Destroyer (or other ASW warship) on patrol? I assume that initially an offensive policy was adopted but as their ASW capability developed a more cautious strategy was adopted. Was this an official policy and if so when did he changes occur or did the decision remain at the discretion of the Kaulein throughout?

I count between 7 and 10 British destroyers possibly torpedoed (3 seem to be uncertain). This suggests that something changed in 1917 anyone have any ideas?
