<HTML>Hello,
In July 1917, the American four-masts FLORENCE CREADICK was attacked by the minelayer UC II class UC-48 in the Channel. The U-boat was fitted like the others UC II class with one radio mast behind the conning tower, two periscopes and one 8.8cm gun on the foredeck (+ six mine-carrying tubes and three torpedo tubes).
According to the four-masts crewmembers who escaped, the U-Boat used two deck-guns to attack their ship (no torpedoes) and they described her as follows (from bow to stern):
- one 3 feet hatch
- one deck-gun
- one 40 feet mast
- the conning tower
- one 3 feet hatch
- a second deck-gun
- one 30 feet mast
This seems to look like to a large ocean-going U-cruiser, not a UC II class. Nevertheless it is sure that the UC-48 attacked this four-masts (the name is written in her KTB and the ship has been sunk with explosive charges).
Does someone know if the UC-48 may have had an other design than the basic UC II one, fitted with a second deck gun and a second mast or is it only a bad description from the four-masts frightened crewmembers ?
Does anyone also know where I could find a photograph of the UC-48 or a UC II class ?
Thanks for all help,
