Frank,

Bounties were common in WWI for sinking U-boats. The rate was £5 per man thought to be on the U-boat. Postwar, the claims came before a prize court which ruled on whether the bounties were to be paid.

In addition, the Mayor of Dover had a separate fund that awarded £1000 for U-boats destroyed in the Dover area.

Medals were also awarded for sinking U-boats. These ranged up to the VC in some of the Q-ship engagements.

Best wishes,

Michael
