I once read that it was possible to identify a ship if you find the "brand" of the builder of the boilers, then try to trace records.
The problem with this one is that the sea is rough and you can't dive there every day.
The Portuguese Navy charts show lots of wrecks in the Ponta de Sagres / Cabo de Sao Vicente area, but they are too deep for recreative divers.
I will try to cross your information with old Portuguese newspapers.
