Decoys ?

In Clive Cussler's The Sea Hunters II,it is alleged that at least one U boat carried a lifeboat with it to use as a decoy to lure enemy ships.Any truth to this story? Sounds unlikely to me.The last thing a U boat needed was a lifeboat strapped to it's deck!
