The event you refer to occured on Nov.6, 1917. While on his way back to Cattaro, passing Otranto Straits a spread of 3 torpedos was fired against U35 from french sub Faraday, Lt Cdr Bougard. It is true that one of the torpedos fired at low depth jumped over the waves, hit the bridge of U35 without exploding and pursued its way off. The two others went missing one in front and the other one behind the U-Boat. I don't know if Bougard never smiled again after that near-miss but it is probably exagerated. If I remember right, it was Prinz Adalbert von Preussen who was WO when this happened.
