I wonder if D3 was operating in conjunction with the Q ship ?
Q ship/submarine operations were certainly attempted off the Irish coast. HMS Prize was working with a couple of D boats at the time of her loss in August 1917.
On the other hand this sector was a regular patrol billet for D class submarines on anti submarine patrols, operating out of Loch Swilly
