Hi Michael and Yves,

S.M. U 33 wasn't responsible for the sinking of the Russian destroyer but at the moment I have no idea who laid the mine.

S.M. U 35 and S.M. U 38 were no minelaying subs but laid mines during their voyage from Germany to the Mediterranean, S.M. U 35 laid 2 mines an S.M. U 38 laid 3 mines. They were simply dropped over board.
The mines were "S-Minen" = Sehrohrminen, i.e. periscope mines. A dummy-periscope was mounted on the top of the mine and should lure a ship to ram the "submarine". I didn't heard of any success of this type of mines.

ATB
Simon
