Matthias is wrong. U 9 did indeed suffer a refit. The sub was equipped with two rails on deck to carry mines and drop them when running on the surface. U 9 left harbor for only one sortie as minelayer (still able to dive) but had to interrupt caused by engine troubles. The mines were brought back home. See war diary U 9 (30.03.1916-05.04.1916).
