Marine biologist Will Schroeder of the University of Alabama reports from the Deep Wrecks project that the third vessel studied, the tanker GULFPENN in approx. 1,800 feet of water, is largely covered with coral. Schroeder describes the coral assemblage as "literally a vertical thicket -- something I've never seen before." One of these "thickets" measures of 20 feet vertically, and 5 to 6 feet across.
