My father, who is now 91 years old, served on HMS Kempthorne and was at Trondheim when several U-boats surrendered at the end of WW11.We have a photograph of one of the captains he met, which bears a striking resemblance to a photograph of Jurgen Oeston which we found on this site.
Thanks to several people who responded to a previous message on this site,we know that this captain was on
U-861 which was in the area at the time.
We also have this captain's pennant, which has, on one side, a figure of a red prancing cat, and on the other side, the word,"Fahnheim 43" and an emblem similar to a sideways "Z," which is identical to part of the design to be found on the 2nd Flotilla's emblem.
Although U-861 was not part of the 2nd Flotilla,I believe Jurgen Oeston was previously the captain on U-106 which was part of it.
It would be nice to know if Jurgen Oesten was the captain my father met more than sixty years ago and if this was his personal pennant. Can anyone please help?
Regards,
Barrie.
