double barrel flare pistol

My husband has a WWII Double Barrel Flare Pistol and we are trying to find out if it can be traced to a specific U-Boat. It bears the Marking of MIII with three lower case iii's above the roman numerals. It's serial is 4623 with AC43. Does anyone know what this means?
