Would U-boats attempt to rescue men overboard?

Hello,
I read that U-boats lost men overboard, and I wonder if they had in place a contingency action or otherwise a rescue procedure, and what safety measures there were available about it. What a hit on the crew's spirit and morale had been to loose a camrade that way, hasn't?
