<HTML>Hi all
Have recently been busy going over a load of files at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum Archives and I came across a mention of trials that were carried out on Type XXIII and YES a Type XXIV?
Now I know that the Type XXIV was supposedly never built? but was a prototype built? Anyway I reproduce here in verbatum The brief report for you all. Comments welcome on this odd find?
TRIALS OF TYPE XXIII & XXIV U-BOAT 26TH & 27 SEPTEMBER 1945.
The Trials were held in Loch Long and Ardpeaton. The deep dive was carried off Arran on the 30 September 1945. The highest speed achieved on main Batteries (XXIII) in the series was 11.4 knots for 1.2 hours (about 14 miles). At 1.4 on the creep motor an endurance of 138 hours submerged was achieved. The greatest distance achieved submerged was 240 miles on the creep motor at 2.6 knots. This fell away to 200 miles at the lowest speed on the creep motor mentioned before. The highest speed snorting was 7.1/2 knots. Maneourvrability was excellent and it took only 3 minutes and 40 seconds to turn through an entire 360 degrees and 1 minute 3 seconds to turn through 90 degrees the turning circle of about 320 yards.
This very small U-boat had a displacement of 232/256 tons; was 112 foot long and had only one shaft with diesel/electric motors supposedly giving her 9.3/4 to 12.1/2 knots with the creep motor capable of giving 2 knots. Her armament was 2 21-inch torpedo tubes forward and she had a complement of 14.
TYPE XXIV U-BOAT.
The XXIV U-Boat displaced 1,900 tons on the surface and had 2 shafts with Walther turbines giving 22 knots submerged and diesel/electric motors giving 15/12 knots with an additional creep motor giving 2 knots. Twelve 21-inch torpedo tubes were fitted: 6 Forward, 6 Aft angled out from the centre line.*

*The rest of the report is missing?
No Serial Numbers of the U-boats that took part in these trials are given in the report. Further investigations are ongoing!
Will keep the Forum informed of any further developments.
