Hydrometer

<HTML>There is currently a hydrometer on E-bay. The seller states it is for measuring the temperature of the batteries on a U-boat. I was under the impression they were used to measure the temperature of the sea water, which somehow determined how the torpedo would travel once fired. I have one from a collection of items taken by a shipyard worker in Portsmouth, NH. All the other ones I\'ve seen are in a black cardboard tube, but mine is in a wooden tube. Can anyone shed light on this for me?</HTML>
