German sailors still at war?

Hello everybody,
From a former german kriegsmarine officer I learned that, being a professional soldier, he had to sign a contract for life service.
At the end of the war he just received some papers from the english that he was no POW anymore. From the then new german government he received no papers saying he was no longer in service, so never a word that his signed contract was no longer valid.
So as I can make it out he is still serving at 86 years or is he? Has anyone got an opinion at this subject?
Cheers,
Stefaan
