My dad Anthony Albert was a radioman & gunner aboard the PBY squadron VP-53 that sunk the U-156 March 8 1943 ! With broken clouds he spotted the U-boat on the surface. With the sun behind them and clouds used to conceal their where abouts they moved in before the U-boat crew had enough time to react. My father along with the other crew members raked the decks with 30mm & 50mm gunfire to keep the U-boat crew away from their weapons. Their PBY dropped a salvo of 4 Mark 44 TORPEX bombs which caused the sub to lift out of the water and break in half. They then dropped two life rafts to the eleven survivors seen below, however one of the rafts failed to deploy. They stayed on scene circling transmitting their location to allow ships in the area to pick up the survivors but returned to base when fuel was running low. U-boats at the time were now surfacing during day light. At night U-boats had used the dark for cover, however with the use of radar, tactics changed to day time to allow lookouts better reaction time.
