U-Boat sunk in Virgin Islands?

Greetings-
My father has a story about growing up in the US Virgin Islands as a child and when being driven home one night the car stopped and turned off its lights. In the moonlight in the cove there was the outline of a U-boat. Possibly it was picking up or dropping off a spy, who knows. He says that they reported it and that the U-boat was bombed the next day somewhere nearby.
I have no reason to doubt the validity of the story but he was just a boy at the time and it was long ago. I've searched the Internet for records of any such incident but can't find anything. I am guessing perhaps the boat was spotted and an unsuccessful bombing attempt was made. I'm very curious as to whether the community here might have some information about this event.
Thanks very much in advance.
