Sinking of SS Lebore 14 June 1942

<HTML>You\'ll note in \"Events on this Day\" that on this date in 1942 the American bulk carrier (carrying coal to Chile) was torpedoed by the U-172, about 200 miles north of Cristobal, Canal Zone.

If you think you have had a bad day, you might want to consider the fates of some of the merchantmen who were on the Lebore when she went down that day.

On board were15 mariners who in the time span of less than two months had been on three ships (counting the Lebore) which had been torpedoed. They were:

Messman Roy A. Peacock: His ship the Esso T.C. MCCobb was sunk by the Italian sub Pietro Calvi on 31 March. He was being sent home on the Royal Dutch SS Crijnssen (left Curacao for New Orleans on 7 June), and this vessel was sunk on June 10 by the U-504. He was picked up by the Lebore on the next morning, and then the Lebore was sunk on 14 June. He was picked up by the USS Erie on 16 June and taken to Cristobal, CZ.

5 crew members from the Panamanian tanker Sylvan Arrow: their vessel was sunk on 20 May by the U-155. They were resued by the USS Barney, and eventually taken with the ships master, Arthur Beck and 6 other crew members to Curacao where they boarded the Crijnssen. When the Crijnssen was torpedoed, the captain of the Sylvan Arrow and 6 crew members were separated from these 5 crew members who were rescued by the Lebore.

Captain Sgmund Frette and 8 crew members from the Norwegian merchant vessel Lise: their vessel was sunk by the U-69 on 12 May. The captain and 9 members of his crew eventually made it to Curacao where they too were boarded on the ill-fated Crijnssen on 7 June. When this vessel went down, Frette and eight members were picked up by the ill-fated Lebore. (The other crew member ended up in a life boat which beached on the Yucatan Peninsula.)

One other note. Contrary to what is reported in the detail for the Lebore sinking in \"Events on This Day,\" the USS Erie Deck Log shows that she rescued 76 survivors from the Lebore: the master and 22 men were picked up at 1435 on 15 June, then 25 men were picked up at 1159 and 28 additional survivors at 1352 on 16 June.

This is trivia today, but these were important events in the lives of these mariners who suffered a lot to keep food on many tables and the factories running...
