Dear All

I wonder if any uboat.net users have ever came across a reference to a depth charge attack by a Wellington Bomber on the 12th July 1943? Where the U-boat crew succesfuly engaged the aircraft and either drove it off damaged or indeed shot it down?

I am currently researching a RAF Flt/Lieutenant Richard Alfred Coatman 179 Squadron who was a member of the crew of Wellington LA971 (failed to return from operation) the aircraft was equipped with the "Leigh Light" system and while 179 squadron had achieved some success with the Leigh Light/Depth Charge attack system, equally the U-boat crews had also achieved some success in firing into the beam and damaging or destroying costal command aircraft.

Is anybody aware of a combat report from this date that may tie in with the demise of LA971?

Best regards
Paul
