German WW2 U Boat story

Watching Director's Cut of Das Boot just now reninds me of a book I read many years ago about a German U Boat captain's experiences. IIRC the name was "Above us the Waves" but searches under this name keep getting me the 1955 Britsh film.
I remember the book was translated from the German but can anyone help me with the English name?
