Cathrine Survivors & Submarine Encounter

On 20 June 1941 (possibly one day either side of this date) the survivors of Cathrine, sunk 17 June, 1941, by U-43, they encountered a submarine who surfaced nearby. Sub was described as 'French' looking by one survivor, a gun forward, crew wore jerseys. One particularly striking crew member was wearing a cape with green band and a coat with green lapels. He also sported a long red beard.
The survivors say the men in the conning tower spoke German, but looking at U-boats at sea at this time I can find no boat that would be near to where the survivors would be.
Does the uniforms indicate an Italian sub?
Here's a really unusual mention in the report, the survivors state that a young boy, not much older than 10 years, was lifted up in the conning tower to view the lifeboat.
Any input is appreciated.
