<HTML>The HMS Capel set out with the 1st Escort Group to search for the U-boat which had torpedoed the troop transport Leopoldville (http://www.uboat.net/history/leopoldville.htm) off Cherbourg with the loss of 808 men on 24 Dec, 1944.
But this U-boat, U-486 under Gerhard Meyer attacked the Escort Group and hit the frigates HMS Affleck and the HMS Capel with Acoustic torpedoes. The latter sank and the first was towed to port but declared a total loss.
