Surrendered Uboat

I have read the book German Uboats in the Caribbean but how many of them were still operating when the surrender was announced? I a story from a former neighbor who while a young boy in Puerto Rico he witnessed the disembarking of a german submarine crew in San juan area called Ft. Buchanan Army terminal pier in 1945. He mentioned that he noticed that they had a very pale complexion and were being taken off a navy vessel and drived off in Army trucks under armed guard. Does anybody have any information on this?
