At a time when President Obama is awarding Medals of Honor 150 years after the incident, it is time for the German government to recognize with belated Knights Crosses the deeds of some of its U-boat commanders. No one is more deserving of the KC than Detlev Krankenhagen who in May 1944 with almost certain death facing him sank an American aircraft carrier and damaged a destroyer. His deeds remind me of Lieutenant commande Gerard Roope, VC RN who attacked the Hipper, cruiser. His deed was not even known until after the European war ended. Italy recognizes its heroes of WW II with crosses bravery of gold awarded after the war.
