U878 emblem

I have recently found what may be the original conning tower emblem for U878. It has a great patina to it and looks like it could be authentic but how can I tell if it is? U878 was sunk off the coast of France with no survivers so how could this emblem still exist above water? I'm looking for ANY info on this Emblem. How do I tell if it's real? What would it be worth? Thanks in advance for any help/info.
