Did Naval Armed Guard/DEMS do any good?

There seems to have been an enormous amount of resources invested in putting guns and gunners on merchant ships, but I've never heard of one actually damaging a U-boat. Were there instances of them effectively resisting a U-boat attack or were they mainly for morale?
