On 16 July 1942, 500 miles north of the Virgin Islands, the U-161, under Korvettenkapitan Albrecht Achilles, torpedoed and sank, in daylight, the US transport SS Fairport as part of fast Convoy AS 4 (America-Suez). The convoy was being escorted by US Navy destroyers and PBYs. These subsequently hunted the U-boat for nine hours.
Some sources have said that the U-161 was damaged by a PBY attack during the hunt. Is this actually the case?
