Shore visibility

Hello,
I'm doing some research on New York during WW2 and I'm trying to understand what surfaced U-Boots could see, at night, when approaching the US East Coast.
For example, on this site, there are references to U-404 and U-136 which have sunk boats about 10 km east of the New Jersey. From my understanding, a U-Boot surfacing around that distance from shore would clearly see shore structures, maybe car lights etc.
When further away, say 50km, could they see diffuse lights on the horizon? When closer, could they distinguish buildings? And what about daytime? Has a U-Boot ever surfaced in daytime closer enough to see American shores?
If you know a book which explains all of this I'd be glad to hear about it.
Thank you very much for your help.
