<HTML>Hello fellow crew members!
As many of you (might) know, I have a fetish for books, mostly of the naval variety. My latest acquisition is Jane's Fighting Ships of World War Two, a reprint of the original much thumbed schoolboy ( and probably Naval Officers! ) copy. An impressive book nonetheless. Who gets spoiled then? :-)
I have, however, begun to wonder as to the accuracy of the info. Whilst most of the allied fleets are well covered, Germany gets a pretty poor press overall with the U-boat fleet mentioned almost as an apology! The following boats are mentioned under Germany:
U77, 78. U79 to 82. U88 to 92
U37.
U65 to 68. U79 to82. U88 to 92.
U93 to 96. U98.
U29 to 34.
U1 to 11. U17 to 20. U24.
U56 to 63.
Then, almost bizarrely, it mentions U574 by stating '...is the highest number of any number published.' That's it for Germany!
Yet, in the RN section, ex German boats such as U2348 get a mention!
Anyone any idea why this is? Was it deliberate disinformation?
Now onto another question. The book also records the follwing vessels. Can anyone verify if this information is correct? First name is the vessels name:
Memel Blt. 1937 Parent ship to Weddingen U boat flotilla.
Isar (ex Puma) and Lech (ex Panther) boh built 1930. Submarine Depot Ships.
Weichsel (ex Syra) bult 1923. Depot ship for submarines.
Donau (ex Nicea) built 1922. Depot ship as above
Mosel (ex Frieda) Blt. 1921. As above.
Warnow (ex Vorwarts) Blt. 1906. As above.
Achen (ex M113) Blt. 1918. Submarine Tender.
Dahme ( ex trawler Carsten Rehder) Blt 1936 Submarine School Tender.
Spree - no details - Tender to sub school.
T123 (ex S23) Blt 1913. Submarine Tender.
Orkan (ex Wella, ex Grille, ex Star of Eve ex Van der Golts) Blt 1916. Torpedo recovery vessel.
So, can anyone shed any light on these vessels - and their fates?
Aye,
