Is a U-boat a 'he', 'she' or 'it'?

Hi All,

I have noticed that this site always refers to a U-boat as an 'it'. Is there a reason for this? It was my understanding that, at least in the English language, a ship is referred to as a 'she'. Or, is there different naming conventions for u-boats/submarines in general?

Thanks!
