Purpose of openings on U-boat decks

So I just started planning for an RC WWI uboat build and when looking at u boat images i noticed that their decks have openings in them. I don't know a lot about uboats and I'm sure theres an ovious reason to them. My uneducated guess is that the decks allowed water to flow through them and as such didn't need to be pressurized. I'm probably wrong, but I want to make sure the model is accurate.
