ASDIC or SONAR

I'm writing a spy thriller that concerns U-boats and want to be as authentic as possible. Can anyone tell me if the German sailors would have used ASDIC or SONAR when this was used against them by the British ships?

Also would the area where the periscope was be referred to as the control room by the sailors. I'm assuming that the person in overall charge would be referred to as captain?
