The American cargo ship Robin Goodfellow was torpedoed and sunk by U 862 in the South Atlantic on 25 July 1944. Before it went under, the Robin Goodfellow was able to get off an SOS signal that was picked up by MV Priam, a British passenger/cargo ship that had left New York on 8 July bound for Calcutta.
My questions are:
1. to whom would the master of a British ship like the Priam typically have relayed this distress message? To the Admiralty, US Navy, or its owner, the Ocean Steamship Company Ltd.?
2. And if it was to the Admiralty, is anybody familiar enough with British archives to know where such a message might be found, if it survived?
Thanks,
Daniel Donaghy
