U-85 Dive Photos - Sunk April 14, 1942 off Outer Banks

Here is the link for a dive photo of U-85, the first U-Boat sunk by the U.S. Navy in U.S. coastal waters on April 14, 1942. It was a close action surface fight at night when the U-boat was caught in shallow water. U.S. Navy crew members used machine guns to keep the Germans from manning their gun until the Navy could get off the first shot with their big gun. Note the big hole near the conning tower. When the Navy was concerned the sub could still limp back to port to be repaired (and another U-boat was enroute for support), additional depth charges were dropped sinking the U-boat and killing all 29 German sub crew members in the water. Little known fact, but these 29 German submariners were secretly buried at night in Hampton National Cemetery (Hampton, Virginia).
