I think you are describing U-262. Hadley (\"Clandestine Operations\" chapter) describes, inter alia, the Elster and Kiebitz operations along with Code Irland. U-262\'s bow torpedo doors were banged up in ice in the Cabot Strait before the boat arrived at the rendezvous point. As you say, the mission had to be broken off because the escapees never showed up. However, I still remember reading someplace about ice freezing U-boat doors shut. Maybe in regard to the Eisbar flotilla and the Murmansk convoys. Had I but world enough and time I would look through my U-boat books and find the reference. Regards, JH.</HTML>
