Hi,i was researching an eye-witness story and came across these posts.I met some-one this new year(2013) who had actually witnessed the german U-boat surfacing to negotiate the Kyles of bute narrows, which then stayed on surface down the east kyle which was heavily mined. It submerged about 1/2 mile south of the narrows. There was an old private motor cruiser which had been fitted with some artillery run by three old codgers who apparantly were too slow in getting to battle station readiness and by the time they had done so the sub was too far away. The mines were later exploded in rows at the end of the war giving the locals loads of fish.-Phil
