The Bermudas were certainly never a U-boat haven. On the contrary, it was not a healthy place for U-boats to come close to. I\'m not sure about Darby Island, but the U.S. Navy operated patrol squadrons from the Bermudas, including Great Exuma. The Royal Air Force was also present at Darrel Island, an important base and staging post for transatlantic delivery flights. The first U-boat to be sunk by a Bermuda-based aircraft was U 158 on 30 June 1942, by a Martin PBM-1 Mariner of the US Navy\'s Patrol Squadron SEVENTY FOUR (VP-74).
The structures you saw were probably ones related to Allied activities in the islands rather than German.
