<HTML>There was an account in the Admiralty Anti-Submarine Reports of a midshipman having to \"subdue\" panicked crewmen aboard U556 as it was going under using a gun. However the midshipman\'s name is not present on any crewlists, survivors I have interviewed and spoken too know of nobody answering that name, nor of the event in question. Allied propaganda? Or deliberate misinformation from survivors? I see little point in propaganda in confidential Admiralty reports, but you never know.
Hans Hoeltring used to carry a gun. Indeed he shot his own toe off when he was drunk once after spying it peeking at him from the other end of his bunk.
In a couple of weeks I\'m starting work on a biography of a crewman from Hoeltring\'s boat and anoher subsequent U-boat. Aparently they called him \"The Gunman\"...not long afterwards he shot himself.
