<HTML>Here\'s an interesting anecdote concerning a dutch sub in US territory...curious if anyone else has heaerd anything about this:
Several Dutch subs sought internment in England and came under British control after Germany invaded Holland...they were assigned British control numbers, but operated freely flying their own flag. One was O-15 (British No. N-15), which was in the U.S. in May-June of 1942 for repairs at Philadelphia Navy Yard. She was making her way up the coast (put in to New London on June 8).when German subs were active in the Gulf of Maine (U-432 sank Zurichmoor on June 9, U-87 mined Boston Harbor on June 11). O-15 transited Cape Cod Canal on June 11, and was promptly challenged by patrol blimp K-6 The sub successfully answered the challenge as the blimp commenced an attack run, but continued UNESCORTED across Mass. Bay and Gulf of Maine to make Halifax on June 13.
There were several sightings and recorded sound contacts of submarines along the coast and into Casco Bay at the time, which, if O-15 was involved, means her log was in error. She survived the war, her log is in the Dutch National Archives.
Any Dutch sub buffs got a clue about this?
Thanks in advance--Jack</HTML>
