They started again with U1 upwards after WW2, but the numbers painted on the sail is the tactical NATO number starting with S (for submarine). All German Uboats are under NATO command, therefore the S number. They are NOT the hull numbers, which are assigned by the building yard and are inconsequential, once the boat has been commissioned.
