<HTML>Ah. The old Jane\'s listing wasn\'t very clear on that. US practice has been to number all boat sequentially, starting with SS1 (Holland), but to change the letter prefix with each new series up to a point. (The point was when they got to \"U.\") Names seemed to be on and off, depending on the mood of the time, and the traditional fish/sea creature names have been progressively replaced by cruiser and now battleship names in the latest nukes. But you could always tell just how many had been built by the number, so the Los Angeles was the 688th US submarine, but lead boat in the class.
