<HTML>Hi Kim,

I believe these names were simply nicknames given to their boats by the crew. I see Högel uses the term “code name” in his book for those two boats but he gives no definition for it. I don’t think they weren’t used to disguise the name of the boat or keep the enemy from knowing which boat was being referred to and that is what I think of as a code name. For example U-509 (KK Karl-Heinz Wolf) was referred to as “U-Seewolf” by its crew because of the name of its first commander and the wolf’s head emblem on its conning tower but it wasn’t referred to in any official communications as “U-Seewolf”.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
