The following info on these Captains is from \"Der U-Boot-Krieg\" by Rainer Busch & Hans-Joachim Röll:
U520 - Volkmar Schwartzkopff - commanded U520 from May 19,1942 - Oct.30,42
He was born on April 4,1925 in Halle/Saale and graduated Marine school with Crew 34. He became Kapitänleutnant on Feb. 01,42. He was a Division Officer on the German destroyer Z20 (Karl Galster) from March of 1939 to March of \'40. He attended U-boat commander school from April of 1940 to Oct of that same year. Then underwent crew familiarization with U109 from 11/40 - 12/40 and then became her IWO from 12/40-09/41. Then joined the staff of the 2nd U-Flotilla from 10/41 to 11/41. Then he joined the command staff of the 24th U-Flotilla from 11/41 to 12/41. Then went on to the BdU staff from 12/41 to 3/42. He then went back for crew familiarization for U520 from 3/42 to 5/42 and became her commander on 5/19/42 until 10/30/42 when the boat was lost in the Atlantic east of Newfoundland.
U412 - Walther Jahrmärker - commanded U412 from 4/29/42 to 10/19/42. He was born in Marburg on 9/23/17 and graduated Marine school with Crew 35. He made the rank of Kptlt. on 6/1/42. He was IWO on Torpedo Boat Möwe from 10/38 to 6/40. Then became IWO on Torpedo Boat Panther from 6/40 to 12/40 when he became th boat\'s commander until 6/41. He went to U-boat commander school and was a commander in training from 6/41 to 4/42. He then became commander of U412 on 4/29/42 until 10/22/42 when the boat was lost northeast of the Faeroe Islands.
As for if they knew one another, it\'s possible...but hard to prove. If you\'re looking for any further information on them, you might try contacting the U-boat Archive (See this website for Archive address and info). They will likely have photos of the two men and possibly photos from their boats as well. The Archive correspondence takes some time, but the results can be great!
