Can You Identify This Boat

I hope my on-line friends at the U-boat.net Forum will enjoy a mystery as much as I do and apply their considerable expertise and enthusiasm to this challenge. I received these photos of a U-boat commissioning from a gentleman in Canada who asked if I would help him identify the boat in the photos. He explained that the photos belonged to his father who served in the Canadian Navy in World War II and was stationed at Sherbrook N.S. at the end of the war.
My theory is that the boat is U-889 and that the photos were liberated from the boat when it was surrendered in May 1945. The details of the tubing that constricts the firing arc of the AA gun and the flagpole are consistent with photos of U-889.
